Laser scanning is pointless. Lets do more!

Paul Backhouse (English Heritage)

This paper will discuss the application of laser scanning and other mass data collection technologies within cultural heritage, why we should stop scanning things and think about the implications of the collection of large quantities of data. Using the recent English Heritage projects on Stonehenge and at Dover Tunnels as examples, I will explain the approach under by English Heritage to data collection, and why these have produced a better understanding of the sites even though we scanned it with lasers.
